Recently, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) issued a study that determined lane-departure warning systems have a positive, measurable, effect on U.S. roadway safety. IIHS examined accident data from 2015, which showed that the technology has helped reduce the frequency of injury-causing accidents by 21 percent.
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) offers the LaneSense Lane Departure Warning on select vehicles in the United States. The system helps drivers keeping their vehicle in its driving lane through the use of understated steering wheel inputs that indicate accidental lane departures and provide corrective manipulations if needed. A camera-based sensor determines the vehicle's position on the road, allowing the system to alert the driver when it senses that a lane shift has occurred without the turn signal being used; if the vehicle continues to drift, the system delivers a second, visual warning to the driver.
LaneSense Lane Departure Warning is available for these FCA vehicles:
- 2017 Chrysler 300 sedan and Pacifica minivan
- 2017 Jeep Compass, Renegade, Cherokee and Grand Cherokee SUVs
- 2017 Dodge Durango SUV and Charger sedan
